“The whole notion that there’s one person for us comes from Plato not from the scripture. . . The scripture says that our problem isn’t that we’ve been split from some ancient half of a human, it’s that we’ve been alienated from God.”

How often have you heard someone refer to their spouse as their “other half”? It’s a really common idea, but as Gary Thomas points out in his bestseller Sacred Marriage, it’s just not biblical. So perhaps we should stop looking for “the one person” in all the world who is meant for us and spend more time asking God what sort of characteristics we should be looking for. (Let’s not forget to ask Him to build those characteristics in ourselves as well.)
